Fushimi Inari Torii Gates
Fushimi Inari Shrine is an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto. The thousands of vermilion torii gates are viewed by climbing, sometimes very steep stairs or trails, through beautiful landscapes and tall trees on the sacred Mount Inari. The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto God of Rice with Fushimi Inari being the most important. There are many fox statues, thought to be messengers of Inari., as well of many individual shrines along the way.
The climb is very long if you do the entire route. However, enjoying the forested area until the overlook of Kyoto below, will give most people a great place to return back to the beginning.
