Church of St. Mary Magdalene
The Church of Mary Magdalene, built on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Jerusalem and is easily spotted from the Temple Mount with it's sparkling golden onion domes or cupolas. The Russian church's seven golden domes have recently been newly gilded. It was built by Tsar Alexander III in 1888 as a memorial to his mother, Empress Maria Alexandrovna, in the traditional Russian style.
