Volcano ~ Pu`u `Ō `ō Vent @ Kalapana
Beginning in 1983, a series of short-lived lava fountains erupted and built the massive cinder-and-spatter cone of Pu`u` O`o. Lava now flows from the southeast flank of Kilauea Volcano. As of May 31-June 3, 2008, residents and visitors could hike in from Kalapana side to watch the lava and ocean collide with spectacular fireworks shows at night. The large steam plume is visible for miles and contains a toxic mix of acids which can cause breathing problems if the winds are right. The trek, with a well defined path for about 3/4 of a mile, starts from the Kalapana side and offers spectacular viewing of this eruption phase. Presently, people are allowed to park within the area from 2-8 PM.
