Bears with Cubs Nursing : Bears rule the beach at Katmai National Park, Alaska. This mama bear and her two cubs wandered onto the beach as our plane arrived from Anchorage after a 2 1/2 hour flight with all of us desperate to get off the small float plane. We were treated to the mama leisurely nursing of her cubs, then her resting on the beach while the cubs played on the beach and around a small boat. What a treat!

Bears at Brooks Falls-2004 : Brooks Falls is located within Katmai National Park across Cook Inlet from the western side of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. To access the falls, one needs to walk about 1 1/2 miles from the lodge area. Once leaving the "protected" area via a gated floating bridge and gated observation tower, the walk is open to bears and other wildlife. It is very common to encounter bears on the trail but the park rangers brief everyone in what to do should that happen.

Katmai Bears-2007 : Katmailand's Brooks Lodge, reached by float plane, is located in Katmai National Park which has the world's largest population of brown bears. Millions of salmon burst from the Bering Sea, migrating into the lakes and streams of Katmai National Park, where they make their way to spawn, and eventually die, at the place their lives began. These fish provide an abundant food source for the brown bears.

Katmailand's Brooks Lodge is the base for bear viewing at Brooks Falls, with about a 1 1/2 mile walk each way. Visitors are instructed by the National Park Service on how to conduct themselves in "Bear Country" before proceeding to the various platforms and eventually, Brooks Falls.

Bears of Wolverine Creek : Wolverine Creek is located just a short 25 minute float plane flight across Cook Inlet from Kenai and Soldotna where there is excellent sockeye salmon fishing and the most consistent bear viewing in Alaska for both black and brown bears. After the float plane lands, you are transferred to a small boat for salmon fishing and bear viewing in the same location. The bears wander along the shore, standing on boulders to get a better view of the fish before climbing in to catch & feed. These bears are sometimes as close as a foot or so away and may vie for the same fish you are catching, so it pays to keep an eye on both bears and fish!!! Obviously, when a bear is fishing the human stops!

Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes~Katmai : The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is a valley within Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Taking a flight from Brooks Falls in Katmailand one can view the valley filled with ash flow from the eruption of Mt. Novarupta on June 6–June 8, 1912. The name was given by Robert F. Griggs because "the whole valley as far as the eye could reach was full of hundreds, no thousands—literally, tens of thousands—of smokes curling up from its fissured floor."

The mountain, Novarupta, generated many major earthquakes with levels of energy release unprecedented during volcanic eruptions in modern memory. After the eruption, the summit of Mount Katmai collapsed forming the central caldera. The ash-filled valley covers a 40-square-mile area and in places deep canyons have been cut by the River Lethe. The ash forms many striations on the glaciers around the valley for an artistic view.
